The best Mexican restaurants offer authentic flavors, freshly prepared dishes, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, special dietary needs accommodation, and true menu variety.

Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant brings all these qualities together. Our Texas-born restaurant pairs made-from-scratch cooking with traditional Tex-Mex favorites in a festive, family-friendly Mexican restaurant. With locations stretching from Peoria, Arizona, to Fort Worth, TX, Abuelo’s covers the map with zesty Mexican food.

How To Tell if a Mexican Restaurant is Authentic

Entering the ranks of “authentic” Mexican food doesn’t boil down to any single recipe. Mexico’s cuisine spans many regional traditions from Gulf Coast seafood in Veracruz to the Tex-Mex cooking style of the Texas borderlands and the citrus-marinated meats of the Yucatán. Tex-Mex food is a tradition that was born from Tejano cooking in our home state of Texas. Traditional Tex-Mex items include fajitas, chile con queso, and hearty combination platters. At authentic Mexican restaurants, you can find hand-mashed avocado, real chiles, and homemade tortillas. Specialty salsas, sauces, and flavors with deep local traditions add another layer of authenticity.

At Abuelo’s, we make our salsas, sauces, tortillas, and sides from scratch, and we hand-roll our enchiladas. Our menu pairs Tex-Mex classics with dishes inspired by coastal and interior Mexico, like fish in a Veracruz-style sauce and Yucatán-style barbecue shrimp. Diners from Peoria, AZ to Lakeland, FL enjoy the chips and house salsas. Watch our chefs in action as they prepare authentic Mexican food from scratch.

The “Catch the Queso” Promotion runs through September 21.

LUBBOCK, Texas, August, 19, 2025 — Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant, famous for its authentic, made-from-scratch Mexican cuisine and hand-crafted Mexican Margaritas, is bringing back a beloved piece of its history with the return of the Abuelo’s Queso Ball © – a sports-themed stress ball with an unbeatable offer: one free Chile con Queso with a purchase every visit for the life of the ball.

First introduced in 1993, the Abuelo’s Queso Ball © began as a fun way to support local charity golf tournaments. Over time, the promotion expanded to include themed stress balls – basketballs, footballs, baseballs, and even hockey pucks – distributed at universities, sporting events, and community programs across restaurant locations. The queso ball quickly became a nostalgic fan favorite and a symbol of Abuelo’s community spirit.

During Abuelo’s “Catch the Queso” promotion, Abuelo’s Queso Balls © will be released through multiple contests and local community events and endeavors now through September 21. Each guest who receives an Abuelo’s Queso Ball © can bring it in when dining at any Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant and present it to their server to redeem (offer is not valid online or through third-party delivery services).

“Abuelo’s Queso Balls are more than just a fun giveaway,” said Debbie Hill, Director of Marketing for Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurants. “They’re a piece of our history and a tradition that connects us to our guests in a memorable way,” said Hill. “We’re excited to bring them back and share the fun again with our lifetime customers, as well as introduce them to a new generation.”

The promotion will run through September 21, 2025, with multiple opportunities for guests to win or receive their own Abuelo’s Queso Ball ©. Supplies are limited.

LUBBOCK, Texas, May 1, 2025 — Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant, famous for its authentic, made-from-scratch Mexican cuisine and hand-crafted Mexican Margaritas, is celebrating Teacher Appreciation Day by giving teachers and school staff a 20% discount at all locations on May 6, 2025.

Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant is honoring the dedication and hard work of teachers and school staff this Teacher Appreciation Day with a special thank-you offer. On Tuesday, May 6, educators can enjoy 20% off their entire check at every Abuelo’s location. To receive the discount, educators must show a valid teaching or school staff ID. Respect for educators and children’s welfare has run deep at Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant since its inception. In a place of honor at each Abuelo’s location, there is a sculpture of Agustin de la Rosa, a priest who was born in 1824 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and is revered in Mexico for his compassion for children and generous support for local schools and educators. “Father Rositas,” as he was affectionately known, is the wise “Abuelo” who reminds Abuelo’s team members and guests of the restaurant’s core values.

“We appreciate everything our educators do and want to treat them to a well-deserved meal on their special day,” said Robert Lin, President of Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurants. “This is just a small token of our gratitude for the big difference they make.”
