Abuelo’s offers a number of innovative and creative programs, all designed to reward and encourage “Xtraordinary” service and enhance employee satisfaction. The company’s motto, “Doing Ordinary Things in Xtraordinary Ways,” is the basis for our employee recognition programs.

Peso Program

The Abuelo’s “Peso” awards program recognizes and rewards hourly employees for Xtraordinary contributions during daily tasks, safety practices and corporate sponsored contests. Managers hand out the “Pesos” whenever they observe an employee demonstrating Xtraordinary service. The “Pesos” are then redeemed for merchandise including caps, T-shirts, sweat shirts, restaurant and retail gift cards and lots of other great items!

Xtraordinary Acts

Each month one team member company-wide is recognized for an “Xtraordinary” act of service. The specific act of service is posted in all restaurants nationwide and the winner receives 25 “Pesos.”

Long-Term Employee Recognition Program

Receive an annual cash bonus based on your length of service.

Xtraordinary Employee of the Year

Each restaurant chooses an Xtraordinary Employee of the Year, who is rewarded with “Pesos.” Four regional winners and their spouses/guests receive a fabulous, all-expense paid trip to our Annual Awards Banquet, where the company-wide Xtraordinary Employee of the Year is announced. The winner receives a crystal trophy and 500 “Pesos” from company founder James Young and president Bob Lin, as well as recognition in the company’s “La Palabra” quarterly newsletter.

XChef Competition

Abuelo’s sponsors an annual XChef competition to recognize the creative food talents of our team members. Non-management employees propose items for our menu and submit their creations for judging. Each restaurant chooses an XChef winner, who is rewarded with “Pesos” and an XChef cap. Four regional winners receive 250 “Pesos,” an XChef chef’s coat, and an all-expense paid trip to the annual XChef Competition, where celebrities, media, notable chefs and company founders select the Grand Prize winner. The winner receives a trophy and 500 “Pesos,” as well as having his or her creation added to the Abuelo’s Chef’s Features menu.

Throughout the year Abuelo’s conducts sales contests and special incentive promotions that reward team members with “Pesos,” cash, gift cards, iPods, laptop computers, gas gift cards, store parties and much more.
